After lengthy negotiations, Algeria has secured the purchase of Su-35 fighters from Russia.

The Algerian military analyst, Algerian Star Ship, reported on this.

The confirmation of this purchase came with a video showing a flyover of the Su-35 fighter over Algerian skies, which was published by the user Algerian Star Ship.

Additionally, earlier images surfaced online depicting a Su-35 fighter at the airfield of the JSC Sukhoi Company, featuring the appropriate Algerian camouflage and a tail number.

Discussions about the country’s purchase of Su-35s began back in 2016, when Defense Mirror reported that the Su-35 fighters, initially intended for Egypt and later offered to Iran, had found a potentially new owner—Algeria.

No official information about the contract, its cost, or the number of aircraft is available to date, but according to the publication, Algeria may have ordered around 14 fighters, which aligns with its strategy to strengthen the air component in the region.

Meanwhile, DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA reports that Algeria is set to purchase 24 aircraft of this type — the same number Egypt had originally planned to acquire but was forced to cancel due to pressure from the United States.

In addition, in 2022, Military Watch Magazine, citing anonymous sources, reported that Algeria had abandoned its purchase of Su-35 fighters.

According to the publication, Algerian military analysts believe that the performance of the Su-35’s onboard radar system was the main reason for abandoning the purchase of the fighter, which costs approximately 60% more than the Su-30MKA.

Later, this information was refuted following a new phase of discussions between the Algerian Ministry of National Defence and the Russian company.

It is worth noting that today Algeria is one of the largest buyers of military equipment from Russia, with only India purchasing more weapons.

The country’s air fleet consists of the most modern versions of Russian aircraft, such as the Su-30MKA and MiG-29M/M2/S.
