Unidentified drones were detected over the Fort Lesley McNeair military base, where US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth reside.
This was reported by The Washington Post, citing sources familiar with the situation.
According to officials, it has not yet been determined who launched these drones or for what purpose.
It is known only that over the course of a single night in the last 10 days, several drones were spotted flying over the military base.
This incident prompted an immediate meeting at the White House to discuss possible responses.
The drones over the base, located in Washington, D.C., prompted officials to consider relocating Rubio and Hagseth, but for now, they remain in their residences.
Fort Lesley McNeair is located near the Capitol and the White House but lacks the security perimeter found at other military bases in the US capital region.
The publication notes that the unidentified drones were spotted amid the USA’s declaration of a global security alert for foreign diplomatic missions. The US has also closed several domestic bases due to the likelihood of ongoing threats.
This applies, among others, to the McGuire-Dix-Lakehears and MacDill bases, which have raised their security level to ‘Charlie threat level.’
This indicates the presence of intelligence suggesting the possibility of an attack or danger.
It was also recently reported that drones were stolen by unknown individuals from a US military base in Tennessee.
The Criminal Investigations Division of the US Department of Defense has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and prosecution of those involved in the theft.
