Ukraine to receive six additional TRML-4D radars

The German company Hensoldt will supply Ukraine with 6 more TRML-4D air surveillance radars to strengthen the country’s air defense.

The manufacturer reported about this on its official website.

The customer is the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, and the payment is made by the German government as part of military aid.

The cost of purchasing six TRML-4D radars is more than €100 million.

The new radars will be delivered to Ukraine this year. They are needed to strengthen the country’s air defense capabilities amid constant Russian missile and drone attacks.

It should be noted that this is not the first order for such radars for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Ukraine received the first TRML-4D multi-functional radar in October 2022.

At the end of April this year, the German government announced that it had handed over one TRML-4D radar to Ukraine as part of a military aid package. Presumably, this was one of four radars ordered in June 2023. They are to be delivered in 2024.

Hensoldt said that it currently had contracts for the production of more than 50 air surveillance radars of this type with various customers.

TRML-4D

The TRML-4D is a mid-range mobile multifunctional C-band radar developed by Hensoldt in 2018. TRML-4D uses the latest digital radar technology. The TRML-4D radar allows for the detection, tracking, and identification of various types of air targets.

The radar is capable of operating independently, detecting air targets in the interests of air defense or as part of air defense systems, including the German IRIS-T, which are in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The mobile radar uses an active electronically scanned array (AESA) based on solid-state gallium nitride (GaN) elements.

The system is capable of detecting various airborne targets, including cruise missiles, as well as planes and helicopters maneuvering or flying at low altitudes. The radar provides fast detection and tracking of about 1,500 targets within a radius of up to 250 km.
