Sweden is considering the possibility of transferring a certain number of its tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Pål Jonson, Swedish Defence Minister, voiced this, Reuters reports.
The country is preparing another aid package for Ukraine to help the country fight off the Russian invasion.
Currently, the Swedish military has 120 Stridsvagn 122 tanks in service. This is the Swedish version of the German Leopard 2A5 main battle tank.
According to Jonson, the Swedish parliament is increasingly inclined to provide Ukraine with some of the 120 tanks it has.
“We are open to that, and we are in close dialogue with, above all, Germany about it,” the minister said.
Sweden has already delivered a number of military and humanitarian aid packages to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The latest military aid package includes CV90 armored combat vehicles and Archer self-propelled guns.
In the first half of February, Sweden approved military assistance for Ukraine as part of the previously announced aid package. Its value is more than $400 million.
In particular, it will include anti-tank weapons, demining equipment, NLAW light anti-tank weapon systems (called Robot 57 in Sweden), and Swedish CV90 IFVs.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive 155mm Archer-wheeled ACSs, although the partners did not disclose the exact number of self-propelled guns to be shipped to Ukraine.
Stridsvagn 122 is a Swedish main battle tank based on the German Leopard 2A5. The guidance system allows detecting and identifying the target using a laser range finder and a thermal imaging camera. The hydraulic turret guidance system was replaced by an electric drive. The tank gun is manufactured under license in Sweden and is based on the German Rheinmetall Rh-120 L/44 120mm smoothbore gun.
