First Upgraded Stridsvagn 123A Tank Arrives in Sweden

The first prototype of the upgraded Stridsvagn 123A (Leopard 2A8) main battle tank has arrived in Sweden.

The Swedish Armed Forces Land Warfare School announced the equipment’s arrival.

The first tank in the fleet was modernized at the KNDS plant in Munich and transferred to Swedish specialists for further testing and preparation of the material base.

In the first phase, the vehicle will be used to train instructors, who will then train combat crews, as well as technical maintenance personnel.

The upgrade involves a comprehensive repair and modernization (REMO) program for all 110 Stridsvagn 122 (Leopard 2A5) tanks currently in service with the Swedish Army.

Sweden signed a contract for this extensive modernization with the KNDS consortium in 2025, and the entire process of upgrading the fleet will continue until 2031.

In addition to the combat vehicles, the agreement includes ammunition, training systems, administrative and technical documentation, spare parts, and the deployment of the necessary infrastructure and maintenance equipment.
