Driver Training Tanks (DTT) have been brought in to train the Ukrainian crews for the Challenger 2 tanks.
According to the British Defense Ministry, the tank crews arrived in the country at the end of January, and already this week they have been quick to master the controls of the mighty Challenger 2.
“The UK is providing Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine to help them defend their homeland and retake territory,” the department said.
The ministry also demonstrated the training process of Ukrainian tank crews for the Challenger 2 tanks.
Driver Training Tanks (DTT) were brought in to train drivers.
In 1988, the British Army ordered 17 Challenger 1-based training tanks (CTTs) from Vickers Defense Systems.
These were the first purpose-built training tanks for the British Army.
Following the success of the CTT, the concept was ported to Challenger 2, receiving the name of the Challenger Driver Training Tank (DTT).
The turret of the tank is replaced by a fixed cockpit for the instructor and up to four cadets.
It is worth noting that for Leopard 2 tanks, there are also similar training tanks on which Ukrainians will be trained.
In order to do this, the “Driving School” (“Fahrschule”) cabin with seats for instructors and two cadets was placed on the unmodified chassis.
In addition, the training Leopard cabin has a dummy gun. The driving instructor has all the controls and can take over the machine at any point.
