Ukrainian Armed Forces Are Introducing the Position of Drill Sergeant

One of the innovations in the sergeant corps will be the introduction of drill sergeant positions in basic combined-arms training battalions.

In addition, the role of instructors will be expanded at training centers.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, signed the document. The implementation of these measures will continue through the end of 2027.

In addition to introducing drill sergeants and expanding the instructor corps, the document calls for increasing the number of sergeant positions within headquarters and military command structures at all levels.

A drill sergeant is a military instructor responsible for the drill, physical, and disciplinary training of service members, as well as for instilling in them basic military skills and a culture of service.

The term “drill sergeant” (“instructor in drill and intensive training”) is best known in the US Army training system, where drill sergeants work with recruits during basic training.
