President Volodymyr Zelensky and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez sign a bilateral security agreement between two countries.
The ceremony was broadcast by the Office of the President of Ukraine.
During their meeting in Madrid, Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Pedro Sánchez signed a defense agreement, according to which Spain pledged to contribute to Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Spain became the tenth country to sign a security agreement with Ukraine.
“We are the tenth country to sign such an agreement with Ukraine. We see security as integrated, so there are several areas in which we can support Ukraine. The financial and military spheres, reconstruction, recovery and demining are the topics covered by the agreement,” Sánchez said at the event.
According to the agreement, the country is to provide support through the European Peace Fund in the amount of €5 billion until 2027.
Spain has also expressed interest in joint arms and military equipment production projects with Ukraine.
In addition, the Spanish Prime Minister also mentioned a new billion-dollar tranche of military aid to be allocated to Ukraine.
“This year we have allocated one billion euros in military aid,” Sánchez emphasized.
The Spanish Prime Minister said that Spain would participate in the Berlin summit on the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine. He added that the defense, peace and reconstruction were common priorities for his country and Ukraine.
“You can rely on Spain to fight for peace based on the values of the UN Charter,” he said.
Sánchez expressed hope that Ukraine will become a member of the European Union in the near future.
