The U.S. Department of State has approved a potential sale of a comprehensive support package for Ukraine’s M777 howitzers.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) of the U.S. Department of Defense announced this.
Under this approval, the State Department has authorized two possible sales to the Ukrainian government, which include equipment, repair services, and long-term maintenance support for the M777 howitzers, along with related equipment, valued at approximately $104 million.
Separately, the sale of transportation and consolidation services, along with related equipment valued at $99.5 million, has also been approved.
This support will enable the U.S. to provide logistical and material assistance for the howitzers, ensuring they remain combat-ready, allowing for the replacement of 155mm barrels, and facilitating repairs to the carriages.
It’s worth noting that a factory in the United Kingdom is currently producing individual components for the M777 howitzers.
According to company representatives, production of the M777 had been halted some time ago due to a lack of orders, but following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, several countries have shown renewed interest in this artillery system.
According to BAE Systems, other European and Asian countries, as well as Canada and Australia – which have already transferred some of their howitzers to Ukraine – have also shown interest in acquiring the artillery systems.
