U.S. President Joe Biden will make a series of statements to increase the number of U.S. forces in Europe at the NATO summit.
This was announced by national security adviser Jake Sullivan, CNN reports.
Such reinforcements will include two new U.S. destroyers to the Rota Naval Station in Spain. This brings the total number of US destroyers based there to six.
Biden is going to discuss this decision with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during a meeting.
“Those will help increase the United States’ and NATO’s maritime presence,” Sullivan said.
He stressed that the new destroyers will be the first of several specific statements about the US military on the territory of the European Union.
“The United States will be making specific announcements tomorrow on land, sea and air on additional force posture commitments over the long term beyond the duration of this crisis,” Sullivan said.
He added that by the end of the summit, which will take place in Madrid on June 29-30, the United States will announce an increase in the grouping of forces. This is connected to the Russian threat escalation.
As previously reported, NATO is preparing to deploy its largest group in Eastern Europe since the Cold War.
