The commander of the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah, which has been involved in attacks on the US military in the region, was killed in a precision strike in Baghdad.
Reuters reported on this.
“(U.S.) forces conducted a unilateral strike in Iraq in response to the attacks on U.S. service members, killing a Kataib Hezbollah commander responsible for directly planning and participating in attacks on U.S. forces in the region,” a statement from the military reads. It did not disclose the name of the commander.
The U.S. military emphasizes that there are no signs of civilian casualties as a result of the militant’s elimination.
Two security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the commander was Abu Baqir al-Saadi. One of the sources reported that three people were killed.
According to the source, the vehicle targeted was used by Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a state security agency composed of dozens of armed groups, many of them close to Iran.
The means of defeating the terrorist leader has not been reported, but debris similar to a special version of the Hellfire missile was found at the site.
The warhead of this missile is replaced by an inert ballast with many sword-like blades that open before approaching the target.
Such weapons allow eliminating individual targets with an extremely low chance of causing harm to persons very close to the target.
At the end of January, three soldiers were killed as a result of a drone attack on a small U.S. outpost, Tower 22, in Jordan, and more than twenty-five service members were injured.
The U.S. President promised to bring the perpetrators to justice.
