The Netherlands is ready to consider Ukraine’s requests to supply American-made F-16 fighter aircraft.
However, so far, no such request was received by the country’s government.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte stated this at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, which was held in Hague on Monday, NOS reports.
“There are currently no deliveries, no inquiries either,” Rutte said.
He, like Macron, believes that there are no taboos on supporting Ukraine for its victory in the war with Russia.
“However, it will really be a very big next step if it comes to that,” Rutte spoke of the fighter aircraft supply.
F-16 Fighting Falcon is an American fourth-generation multirole light fighter jet from Lockheed Martin. F-16 is considered the most massive fourth-generation fighter jet in the world.
The Netherlands is armed with the F-16AM/BM versions of the jets, which are gradually being replaced by new fifth-generation F-35A combat aircraft.
As previously reported, Ukraine will receive two Patriot launchers from the Netherlands. The Armed Forces of Ukraine will also receive spare parts for Patriot SAM maintenance.
The Netherlands became the third country after the United States and Germany to provide Ukraine with long-range air defense systems. During 2023, the Dutch military will also train hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers.
Between September and November 2022, approximately 90 soldiers of the Netherlands military trained 400 recruits from Ukraine. In January-April, 2023, about 70 Marine soldiers will train 400 more Ukrainian recruits.
The Netherlands might also transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
