Taiwanese Drone Loses Elevator During Demonstration Flight for President

A domestically produced strike UAV lost its elevator during a demonstration flight conducted as part of military exercises in Taiwan in the presence of President Lai Ching-te.

The incident was reported by the Taiwanese media outlet Nownews.

The exercise scenario involved strikes against the coastline as part of a simulated response to a Chinese amphibious invasion.

During the exercise, the Taiwanese military presented a domestically developed medium-sized loitering munition for the first time.

Footage from the exercise showed two UAVs. On one of them, the elevator appears to have been improperly secured and tilted by nearly 90 degrees.

According to the military, the malfunction did not affect the UAV’s flight, and the exercise phase was completed successfully.

The Han Kuang exercises began on August 5 and will continue for 10 days. They are intended to test the combat readiness of Taiwan’s armed forces in the event of a potential invasion by the People’s Republic of China.

According to the Taiwanese Navy, the August 8 phase included “joint anti-amphibious, coastal strike and shore combat” operations.

The exercise was conducted at the Zuoying naval base. The Coastal Combat Battalion deployed mobile radar vehicles, missile launchers, high-speed attack boats, Coast Guard vessels, and coastal defense special operations units.

The UAVs were integrated into a network for target acquisition and fire engagement.

This allowed the military to demonstrate an integrated kill chain and improve the effectiveness of target detection, identification, and engagement.

The exercise also demonstrated the capabilities of the Taiwanese Marine Corps to conduct operations in both maritime and land environments.
