The Swedish government plans to arm the crews of Coast Guard vessels and equip the ships with weapons to strengthen their response capabilities against potential threats.
According to TV4 News, this measure aims to ensure the Coast Guard can better protect its personnel and ships, while also enhancing cooperation with the military during crisis situations.
On the eve of the government meeting, officials were tasked with preparing the necessary proposals regarding the weapons needed for these purposes.
Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin stated that it involved both arming the ships and providing more powerful weapons for the personnel.
“This is driven by the security situation. We see the need for enhanced armament to be able to counter threats such as drones and other types of dangers,” the minister said.
Currently, the personnel of the Swedish Coast Guard are equipped with service pistols, but the government wants to expand this capability.
According to Bohlin, the Coast Guard is expected to prepare a proposal on the weapons it requires by the beginning of next year.
“Sweden may stand out today as one of the few countries that has not armed its Coast Guard vessels. It is completely natural to have the ability for self-defense so that personnel can work safely and protect themselves from external threats,” said the Minister for Civil Defence.
Previously, the Swedish government announced approval of an investment plan to strengthen defense through loans amounting to up to SEK 300 billion ($31 billion). The funds will be used to rearm the country’s civil and military defense forces.
