The Social Democratic Party of Sweden has decided to support the country’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.
Suspilne reported about this with reference to the party’s statement.
“At the meeting held on May 15, 2022, the Social Democrats’ party board has decided that the party will work for Sweden’s application for membership in NATO,” the party said in the statement.
At the same time, the political force has cautioned about the deployment of permanent non-NATO and nuclear weapons in Sweden.
“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has worsened the security situation for Sweden and Europe in general,” said Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde.
Earlier, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö announced their application to join NATO. He stressed that such a decision is not directed against anyone, but to strengthen the country’s security.
NATO has also said it may denote Russia as a threat. The Strategic Concept sets out the Alliance’s priorities for the coming years. It will be finalized at the summit in Madrid in June.
