Supporters of the Russian invasion of Ukraine will have their Latvian citizenship revoked.
Militarnyi informs about it.
The Latvian Parliament in the second and final reading supported the amendments to the law proposed by the Ministry of Justice. They allow to revoke the Latvian citizenship of the persons who support war crimes or other internationally punishable crimes against another democratic state.
The regulation is necessary to ensure that Latvian citizenship is not maintained by the people who have performed and supported activities that are incompatible with the values of Latvia as a democratic legal state.
The citizenship of Latvia will be revoked if a person has provided substantial financial, material, propagandist, technological, or other support to states or persons who have carried out activities (namely genocide, crimes against peace, crimes against humanity, war crimes) that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of democratic states or a constitutional facility.
It will also be possible to have the same action in cases where the person themself has participated in the activities mentioned above.
Information that the person has committed any of these acts would be provided by the Latvian national security authorities. Additionally, challenging and appealing the decision would not suspend its effect.
