The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) detained an agent of Belarusian intelligence services who was spying on Ukrainian military forces along the Ukrainian border.

The press service of the Security Service of Ukraine reported on this.

Counterintelligence officers arrested a 24-year-old unemployed local resident in Volyn, who had been gathering intelligence on the defense of Ukraine’s northern border for the State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus (KGB).

Hoping for financial compensation from the Belarusian security services, the agent agreed to carry out their tasks. Among the main tasks were surveillance of the locations of checkpoints and fortifications of the Defense Forces along Ukraine’s northern border.

On the orders of the State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus, the suspect also attempted to identify military convoys moving along local railways or stationed at transit points of Ukrainian Railways.

To gather intelligence, the agent patrolled the area, documenting fortifications of the Ukrainian Defense Forces and marking their geolocations on Google Maps.

SSU officers had already uncovered the suspect’s activities in advance, documented his crimes, and arrested him at his place of residence.

During a search of the detainee’s home, counterintelligence officers seized a phone containing an anonymous chat in a messaging app, which the agent used to communicate with a Belarusian intelligence officer.

The SSU also noted that the identity of the agent’s handler had already been established by counterintelligence.

A year earlier, the head of the Belarusian KGB, Ivan Tertel, indirectly threatened strikes on Ukrainian hospitals. In a public speech, he claimed that “terrorists and their accomplices” had been hiding in those hospitals, and they would face “punishment.”

He even named the addresses of hospitals in Kyiv, one of which was a children’s hospital, prompting the capital’s authorities to relocate all patients and medical staff to other facilities to protect their lives.

The Kyiv City State Administration responded, calling the statements made by the Belarusian KGB leader “absolute lies” and a provocation aimed at justifying strikes on civilian targets in the Ukrainian capital.
