South Korean troops fired warning shots after a group of North Korean soldiers crossed the Military Demarcation Line.
The Yonhap news agency reported the incident.
The incident occurred in the eastern section of the line last week, when several North Korean soldiers crossed the border.
According to the source, the North Korean soldiers were likely conducting a patrol in the area before returning to their side.
Under the current rules of engagement, SouthKorean troops first issue warning broadcasts and, if the line is crossed, open fire.
Such brief violations of the Demarcation Line have become more frequent amid North Korea’s active fortification of the border. North Korean troops crossed the line 17 times last year.
As previously reported, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol called on North Korea to engage in talks to ensure peaceful coexistence and replace the armistice agreement with a full-fledged “peace regime.”
