South Korea has proposed that North Korea hold talks to resolve disagreements over the course of the demarcation line.
This was announced by Kim Hongcheol, South Korea’s Deputy Minister for National Defense Policy, during a televised address on JTBC.
Seoul is seeking to ease tensions following recent mine explosions that injured three South Korean soldiers.
“The Ministry of Defence is officially proposing to North Korea that inter-Korean military talks be held to agree on the exact location of the ground demarcation line between the North and the South, discuss measures to prevent accidental clashes in border areas, and restore military communication lines,” — said Kim Hongcheol.
Currently, the DPRK is installing additional mines and barbed-wire fences, constructing tactical roads, and building anti-tank walls and other fortifications along the border, which is already one of the most militarized in the world.
According to the South Korean military, North Korean soldiers crossed the military demarcation line 50 times this year while constructing the fortifications.
In response, the South Korean military fired warning shots and issued warnings over loudspeakers.
In November 2025, South Korea had already proposed holding similar talks, but North Korea did not respond to that proposal.
“Last November, we proposed holding inter-Korean military talks to coordinate positions on the location of the demarcation line between the two sides, but the North has yet to respond,” said Kim Hongcheol.
He added that South Korea is also ready for trilateral talks involving United Nations Command.
“We are awaiting a positive response from the North,” Kim Hongcheol concluded.
Earlier, it was reported that South Korea is seeking a path to dialogue with North Korea through Russia.
