American marine drone manufacturer Saronic has chosen Brownsville, Texas, as the site for its Port Alpha shipyard, a project expected to cost approximately $3.3 billion.
This was reported by the company.
Initially located on an 835-acre site in the Port of Brownsville, with the potential to expand to nearly 4,400 acres, Port Alpha will include a shipyard and manufacturing facilities capable of building vessels up to 850 feet (259 m) in length. Future expansion of the site will allow for the construction of vessels over 1,200 feet (366 m) in length. According to the manufacturer, the facility will feature hundreds of acres of waterfront, access to a deep-water channel, multimodal logistics infrastructure, and space for long-term expansion—everything needed to create a next-generation shipbuilding hub.
“America’s maritime future depends on our ability to build again. Port Alpha is our commitment to that mission. Built from the ground up to deliver ships at a speed and scale not seen since World War II, this investment is about more than constructing a shipyard. It is about rebuilding the industrial capacity, workforce, and manufacturing advantage required to ensure American maritime leadership for decades to come,” said Dino Mavrookas, co-founder and CEO of Saronic.
The company is ready to begin construction of the plant this year and bring the facility online in 2028.
Saronic is best known for its small, autonomous patrol boats, such as the Corsair, which rescued an American pilot in the Strait of Hormuz on July 10 and struck an Iranian Ghadir-class submarine on July 13. Other notable boats include the Mirage and the Marauder, the latter of which is participating in the competition to develop a medium unmanned surface vessel (MUSV). MUSVs are military unmanned surface vessels the size of a crew boat that can carry several containers of cargo on their open aft decks.
