The Armed Forces of Ukraine shot down two Russian Su-34 bomber jets on September 24, 2022.

This is assumed based on the analysis of OSINT researchers and messages posted on the Fighterbomber Telegram channel which has sources close to the Air Force of the Russian Federation.

Meanwhile, the LotA analyst examined the video, which was published by the Armed Forces the day before, and drew attention to the features of the fuselage of the affected aircraft.

He concluded that these were not Su-30SM fighters but Su-34 bomber jets.

On September 25, a message was posted in the Fighterbomber Telegram channel claiming that the Ukrainian military had shot down “the two best ones” a day earlier. This expression is consistently being used by the channel admin to indicate the Su-34 bomber jets.

He also shared that the Russians managed to return both crews (2 pilots and 2 navigators). One of the released videos captured that the crew had actually ejected. According to the Russians, one crew was picked up by the helicopter, and the other had to leave under the Ukrainian Armed Forces fire on foot.

He also drew attention to the fact that the UAF started using UAVs to detect Russian aircraft flying at low and ultra-low altitudes. Thus, after visual detection of the enemy, MANPADS crews are receiving an advance warning, which increases the chances of timely hitting the aircraft.

On September 24, the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces and the SOF announced several aircraft being downed. However, the Armed Forces of Ukraine assumed that the Su-30SM and Su-25 were shot down.

According to the OSINT portal Oryx, the Russians have already lost 15 Su-34/Su-34М bomber jets.

Su-34 is a medium-range strike aircraft. It is designed to carry out accurate missile and bomb attacks on enemy ground targets at operational and tactical levels. According to the developers, it can be used under any weather conditions.

Serial production of the aircraft is set up at the Novosibirsk Aviation Production Association named after Chkalov. The aircraft was created as a replacement for the Su-24 fighter jet used in armed conflicts in recent years. The development of the aircraft codenamed Т-10В was launched on June 19, 1986. The base of the project of a successful Su-27 fighter jet was considered a basis for the development of the new aircraft. The first flight of the newly produced Su-34, built as part of the state order by the Russia Aerospace Forces, took place on October 12, 2006.

On March 20, 2014, the Su-34 was adopted by the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Federation.
