Russian Oil Tanker Bound for Asia Suffers Accident in Arctic

A Russian oil tanker sustained serious hull damage while navigating the Northern Sea Route through Arctic ice, despite being escorted by an icebreaker.

This was reported by the Russian insurance company AlfaStrakhovanie, which paid the shipowner 53 million rubles ($650,000) in compensation, according to gCaptain. The insurer did not disclose the name of the vessel, its owner, or the date and exact location of the incident.

The tanker’s hull was deformed due to ice pressure while traveling in a convoy. The insurance company emphasized that even with icebreaker escort, navigation in Arctic waters involves increased stress on the vessel and high risks of damage.

The incident occurred amid Russia’s increase in oil shipments via the Northern Sea Route to Asia. As of August, more than ten tankers had transported approximately 8 million barrels of crude oil along this route, accounting for more than half of the total volume delivered via this route throughout 2025.

To reduce delivery times, Russia is increasingly deploying tankers with low ice class ratings, or none at all, on Arctic voyages during the summer and fall.

At the same time, in 2026, the Northern Sea Route Administration stopped publishing vessel permits and daily operational logs publicly, making it more difficult to independently monitor accidents.

This is not the first such incident on Russia’s Arctic route: in 2025, the non-ice-class SUEZMAX tanker LYNX became stuck in the ice of the East Siberian Sea with 1 million barrels of oil on board, and in previous years, collisions occurred between vessels while following icebreakers.
