Russia has launched large-scale exercises of its strategic nuclear forces amid statements about the threat of aggression.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported on this.

Specifically, command-post exercises on the preparation and use of nuclear forces are being held from May 19 to 21.

The Strategic Missile Forces, the Northern and Pacific Fleets, the Long-Range Aviation Command, as well as units from the Leningrad and Central Military Districts have been involved in the maneuvers.

According to Moscow’s official version, the exercises are intended to practice actions in the face of a “threat of aggression” and to test the readiness of military command structures to implement strategic deterrence measures.

Particular emphasis is placed on improving command and control of subordinate forces, coordination between the various components of the nuclear triad, and comprehensive logistical support during mission execution.

As part of the practical phase, plans include bringing specific formations and military units of the nuclear forces to combat readiness, as well as conducting launches of ballistic and cruise missiles at test ranges within Russia.

According to the Russian side, more than 64,000 military personnel and over 7,800 pieces of weaponry and military equipment will be involved in the exercises.

They include more than 200 missile launchers, over 140 aircraft, 73 surface ships, and 13 submarines.

Of the declared number of submarines, eight are strategic missile submarines, which constitute the naval component of Russia’s nuclear forces.

The exercises will also include joint training and the potential use of nuclear weapons deployed on the territory of Belarus.

Russia regularly uses such exercises as a show of force and a tool for strategic pressure amid international tensions.

The announcement of the maneuvers came amid the ongoing war against Ukraine and the continuing confrontation between Russia and Western countries.

Militarnyi previously reported that training of units in the combat use of nuclear weapons had started in Belarus.
