American defense giant Raytheon (RTX) has secured a major contract to produce AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles for the United States and foreign customers, including Ukraine.
The announced value of the contract is up to $3.5 billion, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense on July 31.
Deliveries under this contract are expected to be completed by the third quarter of fiscal year 2031.
In addition to Ukraine and the United States, the medium-range AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles will also be supplied to Denmark, Belgium, Japan, the Netherlands, Canada, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Taiwan, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Australia, Switzerland, Israel, and Kuwait.
As for Ukraine, these missiles may be used to arm F-16 fighter jets, which are actively involved in repelling missile and drone attacks by Russian invaders.
In addition, various versions of AIM-120 are used as the primary missile for the NASAMS air defense system, which is also in service in Ukraine.
In September of last year, the U.S. Department of Defense also signed a contract to supply AMRAAM missiles to the U.S. armed forces and other countries, including Ukraine, with a total value of nearly $1.2 billion.
Deliveries under this contract are scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2028.
It was previously reported that Australia would purchase AIM-120C-8 and AIM-120D-3 missiles worth $1.3 billion.
These missiles are intended to equip F/A-18 Super Hornet and F-35A Lightning II fighter jets, as well as NASAMS ground-based air defense systems.
The U.S. State Department has approved a possible sale of 400 AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles to Poland.
In April, Raytheon itself announced that it had doubled the production of AIM-120 missiles. This allowed the company to increase annual output to 1,200 missiles of various variants and accelerate the fulfillment of orders.
