Poland Receives New Batch of M1A2SEPv3 Abrams Tanks

A batch of 35 American M1A2SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks has arrived in Poland.

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Polish Minister of National Defense, reported this.

The newly delivered combat vehicles will soon be assigned to the 18th Mechanized Division.

According to Defence24, including this batch, the Polish Army now has more than 300 Abrams family tanks in service.

U.S. manufacturer General Dynamics Land Systems has already delivered 217 of the 250 M1A2SEPv3 tanks ordered under the contract.

The remaining 33 tanks are expected to be delivered to Poland in the fourth quarter of this year, completing the supply.

Poland has now received 333 Abrams tanks, including 116 M1A1FEPs and 217 M1A2SEPv3s.

Under the planned structure, 348 tanks will be assigned to six tank battalions of the 18th Mechanized Division, with each battalion operating 58 tanks.

An additional 18 tanks will be assigned to the battalion at the Land Forces Training Center.

The contract for the purchase of 250 M1A2SEPv3 tanks was signed on April 5, 2022, for $4.75 billion. The deal also includes 26 M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicles, 17 M1110 JAB, ammunition, and a logistics package.

This Abrams variant features enhanced armor protection with the Trophy active protection system, an upgraded digital fire-control system with a Data Link for programmable AMP ammunition, and third-generation IFLIR thermal sights. Other major technical improvements include an internal auxiliary power unit for powering the electronics with the engine switched off, the Vehicle Health Management System (VHMS) for self-diagnosis of vehicle components, and upgraded secure digital communications systems.

A second contract, signed on January 4, 2023, and valued at $1.4 billion, provides for the purchase of 116 M1A1FEP tanks, 12 M88A2 vehicles, eight M1110 JABs, and 26 M1152A1 NG SECM maintenance shelters.
