Poland Presents Heavy CBWP Infantry Fighting Vehicle

Poland has presented the domestically produced CBWP heavy infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).

A Militarnyi correspondent reported this from the MSPO exhibition in Poland.

The CBWP is being developed by companies from the Polish Armaments Group, including Huta Stalowa Wola, in response to the Polish Armed Forces’ need for a vehicle that is heavier and better protected than the Borsuk IFV.

In the configuration shown at the exhibition, the CBWP is equipped with the remotely controlled ZSSW-30 turret used on the Borsuk IFV and Rosomak armored personnel carrier, a 30 mm Mk 44/S Bushmaster II cannon, a machine gun and a Spike-LR anti-tank guided missile launcher.

Other CBWP weapon configurations are also possible, including a 40 mm or 105 mm cannon.

The IFV weighs approximately 40 tons, compared with 28 tons for the Borsuk. The demonstrator is equipped with an 800 kW MTU engine, producing more than 1,000 hp, as well as a U.S.-made transmission.

The CBWP will have two troop compartment configurations, with seating for 6-8 troops.

In this configuration, the vehicle meets the requirements of the SAFE program and uses at least 65% EU technologies.

According to Defence24, the Polish Armaments Group announced plans to produce two prototypes in 2027 and be ready to begin serial production of the IFV in 2029.

Huta Stalowa Wola first revealed the specifications of the new IFV, then known as the Ratel, at last year’s MSPO exhibition in September.
