During the first quarter of 2025, the pace of Russian territory seizure fell by 2.7 times.

The relevant analysis was made by the editorial board of the Militarnyi publication.

In addition, the Defense and Security Forces of Ukraine managed to regain control over 20.2 km².

To do this, the Deepstate service was used to compare the Russian advance from January 1 to April 1, 2025, in all areas of the frontline.

Below are the approximate areas of the enemy advance in all areas of the front, except for the Kursk region:

  • January – 376 km²/month and 12.1 km²/day
  • February – 226.5 km²/month and 8 km²/day
  • March – 140 km²/month and 4.5 km²/day

The Russians, thus, were able to establish control over 742.5 km² of territory. Compared to January, in March the pace of territory seizure dropped by 2.7 times.

Since the beginning of the year, the rate of territory seizure has dropped by about 40% from January to February, while the drop from February to March was 38%.

In December 2024, the occupiers seized 510 km²/month, which corresponded to 16.45 km²/day.

The largest advance by the Russians is taking place in the east, namely in the Donetsk region, where the enemy has made repeated attempts to seize the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

The pace of the Russians’ monthly offensives, thus, decreased by 43% from January to February, and by 68% from February to March, namely:

  • January – 295 km²/month and 9.5 km²/day
  • February – 167.5 km²/month and almost 6 km²/day
  • March – 54 km²/month and 1.7 km²/day

At the same time, the Defense Forces managed to retake about 15 km² from the enemy.

The most difficult area where the Russians deployed significant forces was Lyman-Kupiansk, where the enemy managed to occupy 173 km² of territory, and the Defense Forces recaptured about 5.2 km².

In the Toretsk-Siversk area, the enemy captured about 34 km². The battles in Toretsk and Chasiv Yar indicate that the Russians prioritized a further offensive on the city of Kostiantynivka, which was one of the ten largest cities in the Donetsk Oblast before the war.

Notable changes also occurred in the Zaporizhzhia sector, where the enemy managed to capture about 19 km², with the largest area in March. We are talking about the Piatykhatky-Stepove-Mali Shcherbaky-Shcherbaky section, where in March the Russians occupied the village of Piatykhatky, liberated in 2023.

As for other areas, for example, there was no enemy advance in the north of the Kharkiv region. Also, the Defense Forces managed to recapture small areas north of Kupiansk, and the enemy managed to conditionally improve its position in only a few places.
