Moldovan authorities intend to amend legislation to allow for the domestic production of drones to meet the country’s own needs.
Igor Grosu, Moldovan Parliament Speaker, stated this on the Realitatea te privește program.
According to him, the parliament plans to amend the regulatory framework, as current legislation does not currently permit such manufacturing activities.
Grosu emphasized that the drones will be manufactured for domestic use, and rumors about plans to produce them for export are unfounded.
It is expected that the drones produced will be used not only for defense but also in emergency situations, for search and rescue operations, to document traffic accidents, and in agriculture.
For her part, President Maia Sandu previously noted that Moldova plans to produce interceptor drones to protect its own airspace.
She noted that to develop this industry, the government plans to attract foreign investment and draw on Ukraine’s experience.
The initiative arose following repeated incidents of Russian UAVs and missile debris falling on Moldovan territory.
Currently, Law No. 174/2021 classifies the design and production of UAVs as strategic sectors, requiring prior approval of investments by the State Council.
At the same time, Law No. 845/1992 maintains a monopoly on the manufacture of military equipment exclusively by state-owned enterprises.
The draft provides for amendments to the legislation that will allow private companies and foreign investors to participate in production.
On the morning of October 3, Banderol missiles and jet-powered drones flew into Moldova and subsequently exploded near a number of settlements in several districts.
