Mali Reports Russian Molniya Drone Downed

A Russian Molniya-type drone was reportedly shot down near the town of Dioura in central Mali.

Alerte Sahel reported the incident and published footage of the UAV after it crashed.

According to the author of the post, before withdrawing from the Dioura area, Russian troops from the Africa Corps used the UAV against positions of militants from the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), after which the drone was shot down.

The released footage shows a damaged fixed-wing drone with an elongated fuselage and straight wings. Based on its external features, the aircraft appears to be a Russian Molniya-type UAV.

However, the footage shows the drone only after the crash, so it is not possible to determine the cause of its loss or the mode of attack. Therefore, the information that it was shot down is currently based on Alerte Sahel’s report.

The Molniya is a Russian fixed-wing loitering munition with a simple, inexpensive design and a range of about 30–40 km. It can carry a warhead weighing up to 7 kg and is also used for reconnaissance and artillery fire adjustment.

Fighting in Dioura Area

Active fighting in the Dioura area of Mali’s Mopti Region has been ongoing since September 10, 2026, when JNIM militants attacked positions of the Malian army.

JNIM is one of the most powerful jihadist organizations in the Sahel and al-Qaeda’s official affiliate in the region. The name is commonly translated as Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims.

The General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces officially reported an attack by armed groups in the Dioura sector and the launch of retaliatory actions. In a subsequent statement, the military said it had conducted air and ground operations against the attackers.

Fighting in the area continued for more than a week. On September 17, the Malian General Staff reported that its units, with support from partners, continued to strike enemy positions near Dioura.

On September 8, JNIM ambushed Russian Africa Corps forces and Malian junta troops in the Mopti Region, killing 13 Russian and Malian junta soldiers.
