Lockheed Martin Awarded Contract to Produce ATACMS for Taiwan

Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract to produce ATACMS ballistic missiles for Taiwan.

This was announced by the Pentagon.

The contract has been concluded with the U.S. Army rather than directly with Taipei. It is valued at $439,387,261, bringing the total value of all previously awarded contracts under this program to $896,708,696.

The work will be carried out in Grand Prairie, Texas, with completion expected by February 28, 2031.

In December 2025, Taiwan received approval to purchase 420 ATACMS ballistic missiles and 81 HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems.

In May, it was reported that Taiwan would deploy HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems on the islands of Penghu and Dongyin to strike targets along the Chinese coast.

In total, the country plans to receive 111 HIMARS launchers and 504 ATACMS ballistic missiles with a range of up to 300 km from the United States.

The HIMARS systems are expected to be assigned to the headquarters of each corps artillery command. At the same time, given the large number of systems on order, some launchers will be assigned directly to the island defense commands.

ATACMS missiles launched from the Penghu Islands are capable of striking People’s Liberation Army amphibious force staging areas around the cities of Quanzhou, Xiamen, and Zhangzhou.

With the Taiwan Strait measuring roughly 200 km across, these systems can also strike rear-area logistics hubs located more than 150 km inland from China’s coastline.

Dongyin Island is of particular strategic importance as Taiwan’s northernmost territory, located just 34 km from China’s Xishuang Islands.

From there, mobile HIMARS units are capable of striking the Wenzhou surveillance base in Zhejiang Province, as well as the airbase in Fuzhou.

In addition to aviation and naval facilities, radar stations and air defense positions of the PLA’s Eastern Theater Command also fall within the strike range.

In October 2024, Taiwan received its first batch of US’s M142 HIMARS rocket systems.
