Latest 155-mm Scorpio-XR Projectile Exceeds Expectations

BAE Systems has successfully tested the Scorpio-XR, its latest artillery round.

The new-generation projectile outperformed planned metrics and the developers’ expectations.

Tests were performed in cooperation with the U.S. Army’s DEVCOM Weapons Center. Developers said the trials mark a significant step in enhancing long-range fire-support capabilities.

According to official information, the 155-mm Scorpio-XR (initially designated XM1155-SC) showed excellent accuracy at long range, improved aerodynamics, and high in-flight stability.

The results surpassed expectations in both range and target-hit accuracy, opening up new options for artillery units that require effective firepower at extended distances.

BAE Systems stated that the new round is compatible with all modern 155-mm artillery platforms — from 39-caliber short-barrel guns to 58-caliber long-barrel systems — allowing for seamless integration without requiring major equipment modifications.

Scorpio-XR offers approximately double the range of current equivalents. Built-in sensors also enhance target detection and engagement, including against moving targets.

Jason Casiotti, Program Director for Combat Systems Development at BAE Systems, said: “We are expanding the boundaries of accuracy for long-range artillery systems. This achievement is an important milestone in understanding how modern technologies will shape the future of artillery.”

Casiotti added that the results mark a key stage in the program’s development. The company stated that it will continue to invest in innovation and research to strengthen its position in high-precision, long-range munitions.

Scorpio-XR is part of a family of high-velocity, precision-guided munitions designed to defeat moving targets in challenging combat conditions.
