Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KMDB) has produced 600 BTR-4 armored personnel carriers since the beginning of 2022.

A representative of the relocated enterprise told Militarnyi’s correspondent about this at the MSPO exhibition in Poland.

The enterprise has the production capacity to manufacture about 200 combat vehicles of this type per year. It also became known that the BTR-4E consists of 80% Ukrainian-made components.

According to the KMDB representative, the state is not currently purchasing BTR-4Es. Militarnyi previously reported on the threat of production being halted, with this becoming known on June 2.

It was then reported that the enterprise’s workers were completing the last existing state order on the production lines.

At the same time, the stock of components currently available at the plant is sufficient to manufacture between 100 and 200 additional armored personnel carriers.

Upgraded BTR-4E

The BTR-4E presented at the exhibition features a rear ramp whose design was developed in accordance with military requirements. The enterprise plans to switch to serial production of armored personnel carriers with this configuration in the future.

The vehicle’s protection meets the requirements of the STANAG 4569 international standard. The frontal armor provides Level 3+ protection against 12.7 mm armor-piercing incendiary rounds. The side and rear projections meet Level 3 protection and can withstand hits from 7.62 mm rounds.

The armored personnel carrier’s mine protection is provided by several layers of armor plates corresponding to Levels 3a and 3b. In addition, the inside of the hull is fitted with a spall liner made of synthetic aramid materials.

To protect against shaped-charge munitions, slat armor has been installed around the vehicle and on its upper hemisphere. Special screens made of chains and metal rods are also used to counter loitering drones.

The upgraded BTR-4E is equipped with a Ukrainian-made electronic warfare system. The developers also plan to integrate an active protection system into the combat module and the armored personnel carrier itself, as well as additional anti-drone nets.

In addition, the vehicle has received the advanced Topaz integrated combat management system, which is currently undergoing testing.
