Japanese shipbuilder Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Maritime Systems (MHIMS) has delivered the new patrol ship Hiroshima to the Japan Coast Guard.
A formal handover ceremony took place at the company’s shipyard in Tamano, Okayama Prefecture, according to MHIMS.
The new patrol ship Hiroshima is the sixth vessel of this class built at Mitsubishi’s facilities.
The series is being built as part of a Japanese government program to strengthen the Japan Coast Guard’s combat capabilities and ensure the safety of civilian shipping.
The lead ship in this series—the Miyako—was delivered to the customer on February 20, 2020, after which the shipyard began mass production of these vessels.
In total, a series of 11 patrol ships of this class has been ordered under the program.
Upon its commissioning, the Hiroshima will be assigned to the 6th Regional Headquarters of the Japan Coast Guard, based in Hiroshima.
The ship’s crew will patrol territorial waters, protect maritime borders, conduct search and rescue operations, combat crime at sea, and protect the environment.
The Hiroshima belongs to the class of large patrol ships with a displacement of 3,500 metric tons.
The ship’s overall length is 120 meters, and its hull width reaches 14 meters.
Thanks to its propulsion system of four Yanmar 8EY33W diesel engines with a total power output of 24,000 k.s., the ship can reach speeds exceeding 25 knots.
Previously, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding launched the new patrol ship Wakasa for the Japan Coast Guard.
