Greece received the first Island-class patrol boats

The Greek Navy received the first Island-class patrol boats from the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard handed over the first two of the four Island-class patrol boats to the Greek Navy on July 3, 2023.

The boats arrived at the port of Perama in Greece. Two more boats will arrive in a few weeks.

The ships are transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard unit stationed in Manama, Bahrain. The boats formed the basis of the Patrol Forces Southwest Asia (PATFORSWA) to provide the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet with a combat-ready patrol force.

Greece became the sixth country to acquire patrol boats of this type.

In the United States, ships are gradually replaced by the larger and more powerful Sentinel boats.

The four Island-class boats would replace the old Nasty and Antoniou-class coastal patrol ships.

Militarnyi previously reported that on November 25, 2021, the Fastiv and Sumy patrol boats were launched in Odesa. They came from the United States to reinforce the Ukrainian Navy.

The Sumy (P192) boat was the first to be launched. An hour later, the Sphinx tug pulled it into a practical harbor to the South base of the Ukrainian Naval Forces.

The launch of the boats was preceded by long preparations: the day before, the installers detached both vessels from the transport lodges located on the upper deck of the cargo ship.

Both boats arrived in Ukraine from the United States aboard the Ocean Grand freighter on November 23, 2021.
