German Patriot System to Guard Turkish Airspace

Germany will deploy a Patriot air defense system to Türkiye as part of NATO efforts to strengthen the country’s air defenses.

According to the German Defense Ministry, 150 German troops from the 1st Air and Missile Defense Wing will arrive in Türkiye at the end of June together with the system.

The German contingent will replace a US unit that had been performing the same mission in the region.

The Patriot system is expected to remain in Türkiye and protect its airspace until September.

In this way, the Bundeswehr will support NATO’s integrated air defense on the alliance’s southeastern flank amid the ongoing military tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

“The German Patriot unit will now replace the unit of our American partners on the ground and make an important contribution to air defense,” German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced.

Plans to deploy an additional Patriot air defense system to Türkiye within the NATO framework became known in March.

Previously, Türkiye’s Defense Ministry stated that NATO air defenses operating in the country’s airspace had intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Iran.

German Patriot units had previously been deployed to Türkiye as part of NATO’s Operation Active Fence. For nearly three years, they protected the airspace of the alliance member bordering Syria.

The American defense company RTX (Raytheon) has signed a $3.7 billion contract to supply Ukraine with several hundred GEM-T interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems.

The German government will finance the purchase as part of its military assistance program.
