France has begun preparations to train Ukrainian pilots to fly Rafale fighter jets.
This was announced by Benjamin Haddad, France’s Minister Delegate for European Affairs, in an interview with franceinfo.
“We are currently discussing with the Ukrainians the issue of deploying Rafale fighter jets, piloted not by French but by Ukrainian pilots, in Ukrainian airspace. That is why we have also begun work on training these pilots,” said Benjamin Haddad.
Earlier, France and Ukraine agreed on the delivery of a batch of 16 Rafale fighter jets.
Ukraine is expected to receive its first French fighter jets as early as 2028–2029.
Overall, it has been reported that 100 French Rafale fighter jets are planned to be ordered to strengthen the Ukrainian Air Force.
In July, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that training for Ukrainian pilots and mechanics to operate the Rafale is set to begin in France this year. Upon completion of the training, the first four Rafale aircraft are to be transferred to Ukraine’s arsenal.
Currently, France has specialized GROB G-120TP training aircraft at its disposal to conduct the basic and advanced stages of training.
France also operates Dornier Alpha Jet advanced jet trainer-combat aircraft.
These aircraft enable pilots to acquire the necessary skills in flying, navigation, and performing aerial combat maneuvers before transitioning to combat fighters.
