An extremely rare Catastrophe Areas Recovery Vehicle of the VRAC type appeared in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Analysts from Ukraine Weapons Tracker said that only three armored vehicles of this type were produced.
It is still unclear how the armored vehicle, originally made in Spain, ended up in Ukraine.
“An extremely rare vehicle in service with the Ukrainian army is the VRAC Catastrophe Areas Recovery Vehicle based on the Pegaso armored vehicle,” analysts said.
The vehicle’s green camouflage (formerly white – ed.) indicates that it is used for military purposes by Ukrainian troops.
“This particular vehicle has been converted for medical evacuation,” the analysts explained.
The original mission of the vehicle, converted from a Pegaso BMR 6×6 armored personnel carrier, is to rescue people from disaster zones in extreme weather conditions.
It is possible that the Spanish government presented the armored vehicle to Ukraine, although there is no official message about this.
It is also possible that it was bought by a private benefactor and transferred to Ukraine.
Spanish Pegaso armored vehicles have been produced by Enasa since 1979. Throughout its life, it received various weapons, there is a version for a field ambulance.
The BMRs of the Spanish Army played an important role in the actions of Spanish troops in international operations in the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon.
Recall that the Spanish government allowed the launch of a program to replace a fleet of outdated armored personnel carriers М113 with a tracked car of domestic production.
