Explosions Reported in Peter the Great Gulf During Russian Far East Naval Exercises

Explosions occurred in Russian waters in Peter the Great Gulf near the settlement of Volchanets.

Witnesses in the settlement of Volchanets in Primorsky Krai recorded a column of smoke over Russian waters.

The location of the explosions is linked with the presence of the Russian Pacific Fleet.

The Russian government and the fleet command have not made any official comments so far.

The explosions may be related to exercises conducted by the Russian Pacific Fleet on August 20, which involved the Varyag missile cruiser, the Omsk nuclear-powered submarine, and the Bastion coastal missile system.

Omsk is the Russian K-186 nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine of the Project 949A Antey class (NATO reporting name: Oscar II).

The submarine has been part of the Russian Pacific Fleet’s submarine forces since 1994.

The Project 949AM deep modernization program envisages replacing the existing 24 launchers with universal launchers capable of carrying up to 72 Kalibr, Oniks, or Zircon missiles.

According to the exercise scenario, Omsk currently retains its original configuration and conducted a salvo launch of P-700 Granit anti-ship cruise missiles. The strike targeted a naval target at a range of about 300 km.

Omsk is equipped with six bow torpedo tubes:

• four for 533 mm torpedoes;
• two for 650 mm torpedoes.

As of August 2026, Russia has six submarines of this type in service or listed in its naval inventory, although their actual condition varies.
