EU Approves €6.6 Billion in Military Aid for Ukraine

European Union member states have agreed on the terms for allocating €6.6 billion from the European Peace Fund to provide military support to Ukraine.

This was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, on social media platform X.

“EU member states have agreed on the terms for allocating €6.6 billion from the European Peace Fund to Ukraine. This is good news for Ukraine and bad news for Russia,” she noted.

According to Kallas, €900 million of this amount will be allocated to fund the EU Mission to provide military assistance to Ukraine.

Another €1 billion is earmarked for new joint procurements of defense equipment.

The largest portion of the package, €4.7 billion, will go toward compensating member states for the cost of military equipment and weapons they have already transferred to Ukraine.

Kallas also noted that some EU countries have already announced their intention to use the compensation received to further support Ukraine.

Separately, the EU High Representative emphasized the impact of Russian hybrid attacks on the stance of European countries.

“Moscow’s hybrid attacks are aimed at intimidating Europe and forcing it to reduce its support for Ukraine. Europe is doing the opposite,” Kallas stated.

The European Peace Fund is an off-budget EU instrument established in March 2021 to finance measures within the framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy, in particular conflict prevention and the strengthening of international security.
