Drones hit Russian Morozovsk military airfield

Russia announces a massive drone attack on the Morozovsk military airfield, where fighter-bombers that strike Ukraine are based.

This airfield is located in the Rostov region of the Russian Federation.

The drone attack took place on the night of April 4-5. The first explosions occurred around midnight local time.

The governor of the Russian region, Vasily Golubev, said that the military airfield, located near the city of Morozovsk in Rostov region, had been attacked by more than 40 drones.

Local media and Telegram channels reported the distinctive sounds of UAVs flying overhead and dozens of explosions, and eyewitnesses also observed bright flashes in the sky near the airfield.

Golubev said that Russian air defense had allegedly downed more than 40 air targets in the Morozovsky district. According to him, the attack damaged a power substation, and the region is experiencing problems with electricity.

Subsequently, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that on the night of April 5, their air defense system allegedly downed 44 UAVs over the Rostov region.

Morozovsk military airfield in the Rostov region of Russia, located 3 km southwest of the city of Morozovsk. The 559th Bomber Aviation Regiment of the 1st Guards Composite Aviation Division of the Russian Aerospace Forces is based at the airfield. On the eve of the full-scale invasion, 36 Su-34 fighter-bombers were based at the military airfield.

It is these aircraft that Russia uses to guided bombs towards the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Ukrainian settlements near the frontline and bordering Russia.

According to satellite imagery released by OSINT analyst MT Anderson, as of April 4, 2024, there were 29 combat aircraft at the Morozovsk military airfield – previously, 26 Su-34 fighter-bombers and 3 Su-30/35 fighters.

There is no confirmed data on damage to aircraft at the Morozovsk military airfield as a result of the night attack.

It is worth noting that this is not the first drone attack on this Russian military airfield, from which aircraft have been striking at Ukrainian territory.
