Strike drones attacked an oil refinery in the city of Kstov, Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia.

Astra reported on this.

The attack took place on the night of January 28-29, 2025. The strike damaged tanks with oil products, which led to a large-scale fire.

Local residents report that about ten explosions were heard from the plant.

The Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez oil refinery is one of the largest oil refineries in Russia and is located at 56.13278210600415, 44.1796687086928.

Gleb Nikitin, governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, claimed on his Telegram channel that the fire was caused by drone debris falling and that the attack had been repelled.

“As a result of repelling the UAV attack, the wreckage of the drone fell on the territory of one of the enterprises of the Kstovo industrial zone. Firefighters are currently extinguishing the fire; according to preliminary reports, there were no casualties,” Nikitin wrote.

Meanwhile, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, during the night of January 28-29, 104 drones were intercepted by air defense systems and electronic warfare units, four of which were directly over the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

According to official data, the installed capacity of the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez plant is 17 million tons of oil per year. In 2022, the plant processed 15.7 million tons of crude oil. This accounts for approximately 5% of Russia’s total oil refining volume, making it the fourth-largest refinery in the country.

It is worth noting that the refinery is located at a distance of about 800 km from the state border of Ukraine. Despite this distance, drones have already attacked it in the summer and fall of 2024.

Militarnyi previously reported that a primary oil refining unit caught fire at a refinery in Ryazan, Russia, as a result of a repeated drone attack, which led to the suspension of the plant’s operations.

The AVT-4 unit, which produces distillates of gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, and fuel oil from petrol, caught fire.

In addition, other equipment at the plant was damaged. In particular, the impurities and moisture purification units, as well as the VGO unit, which converts vacuum gas oil into high-quality gas oil. The sulfur desulphurization unit was also damaged.
