On Wednesday, October 21, drone wreckage, including the fuselage and part of the engine, was found in Romania’s Buzău County.
Romanian television channel Digi24 reported the incident.
The drone wreckage was discovered by a local resident in a field near the village of Moșești. Investigations are underway to determine the origin of the UAV.
“The young man who found the wreckage in the field called me and later contacted the 112 emergency service. As far as I know, firefighters have already arrived in the commune and are heading to the location. I can’t say exactly when the incident may have occurred. We often hear loud explosions and the sounds of aircraft, so I can’t say for sure,” Domnica Vlad, head of the Robeasca commune, said.
Emergency responders, police officers, gendarmes, and specialists from the Romanian Intelligence Service are currently working at the scene.
“Investigations are currently underway to determine the origin of this piece of military equipment,” Dimian noted.
The outlet suggests that the wreckage may belong to a drone that crashed in a field several days ago and was not detected by Romanian radars.
Meanwhile, when asked whether the wreckage had indeed been there for several days, Dimian said he could not confirm this information.
“The search area will be significantly expanded, far beyond the section we can currently see behind us. This has happened before: the search area then grew from a few thousand square meters to several hectares. This is the situation, these are the times we live in. We are on the border with a war zone. It seems that, because of this conflict, some aircraft occasionally veer off course and end up landing or crashing where, so to speak, they absolutely should not,” Dimian added.
On the morning of October 21, Romania’s Ministry of National Defence radar surveillance systems detected a group of aerial targets northeast of the Ukrainian city of Vylkove. At 03:34 a.m., an air raid alert was issued in the northern and eastern parts of Tulcea County. As no violation of Romanian airspace was detected, the alert was lifted at 04:02 a.m.
On October 17, Romanian F-16 fighter jets shot down two drones that had violated the country’s airspace.
