The European Union is proposing to expand the Drone Wall initiative to protect the entire continent.
Reuters reported on this.
Initially, the Drone Wall was planned to be deployed only on the eastern flank of Europe to defend against Russian drones.
However, as the media reports, citing EU officials, some regions later expressed feeling left out.
The proposal to expand the European drone defense initiative will be included in the Defense Readiness Roadmap, which the European Commission will present on Thursday.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed creating a drone wall after around 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace in September 2025.
The idea is to counter future intrusions into the airspace of EU countries by establishing a network of sensors, EW systems, and weaponry from the Baltic States to the Black Sea.
“East European countries approved her proposal, but southern and western European nations stated that it does not account for the drone threats in their part of the continent,” writes Reuters.
At the end of September, UK Defense Minister John Healey announced that Ukrainian drone interceptors, which will be produced at British facilities under the OCTOPUS project, will form the basis of the European Drone Wall.
According to him, these drones have already proven effective in combating Geran/Shahed drones.
Poland, Estonia, and Lithuania have repeatedly urged the European Union to invest in the protection of their borders, as the security of the entire union depends on them.
And they succeeded, receiving some of the largest loans for defense spending under the SAFE program.
