The Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that a ceasefire cannot be unilateral or asymmetrical.

This was reported to Suspilne online media outlet by the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Main Communications Directorate.

They noted that such a situation would pose a threat to Ukrainian service members.

“A ceasefire cannot be unilateral or asymmetrical. Otherwise, it would endanger the lives and health of our service members. Therefore, the tasks of the defensive operation are currently being carried out in full,” said a representative of the agency.

The previous evening, it was reported that units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces had received orders to observe a ceasefire along the line of contact from 12:00 a.m. on September 5 until 11:59 p.m. on September 8.

Ukrainian troops were permitted to open fire only in response to Russian actions, sources noted. At the same time, it was not known at that time whether Russia would agree to a reciprocal ceasefire.

Shortly before the ceasefire was announced, it became known that the U.S. insisted that Ukraine temporarily halt attacks on Moscow and Russian energy facilities, and that Russia cease missile strikes on Kyiv while Trump’s special envoys were in Ukraine and Russia. U.S. media outlets announced that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would visit the capitals of Ukraine and Russia this weekend.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in his evening address that Ukraine is prepared to refrain from airstrikes against Russia during this period.

Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, announced on Saturday that Ukraine had sent a ceasefire proposal to Russia. He emphasized that the proposal concerned not only strikes on Ukraine but also hostilities on the front lines.

“Drones are flying—you’ve all seen it,” Budanov noted in a comment to Suspilne online media outlet.

After midnight on September 5, the Russians used jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles to strike Ukraine.
