Britain has ordered a new batch of NLAW anti-tank missile systems.
This is stated in the press release of the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.
The contract was signed between the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.
The contract allows Sweden to use the existing agreement with the manufacturer Saab for production of NLAW anti-tank systems.
The complex, called the Robot 57 in Sweden, is used for fighting modern combat vehicles and is one of Britain’s military contributions to Ukraine.
The signed agreement gives Britain the opportunity to accelerate the acquisition of NLAW, as well as to purchase armor-piercing shells.
For Sweden, the agreement provides opportunities for joint financing for the further development of the NLAW system.
With a weight of only 12.5 kg, the NLAW is a portable system which is launched from the shoulder, and can be used by one operator.
Its armor-piercing warhead can destroy a well-protected modern battle tank with a single shot, and the system has an effective range from 20 to 800 meters.
Unlike many other ATGMs, NLAW does not use an active target guidance system. Instead, it uses “predicted line of sight” guidance, including magnetic and optical sensors to move quickly to the target location. The operator simply tracks the target for a few seconds before firing, while the NLAW does all the rest.
The rocket flies about a meter above the tank’s turret and strikes the turret. The system is also extremely effective in situations where the operator can only see a tiny part of the enemy’s technique.
NLAW is a game changer. Because it is portable and flexible, it allows you to attack tanks from almost any position – from the height of a building, tree or ditch. While the NLAW can stop the tank, it is also effective against other targets. In direct attack mode, it can be used against light targets such as trucks, buses, cars, helicopters.
