The 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army destroyed nearly a hundred Shahed kamikaze drones during its deployment in the Middle East.
Task & Purpose reported on this.
According to the publication, the military began effectively shooting down drones after a brief training course, gradually improving their counter-drone tactics during actual combat duty in Iraq.
Special shelters were built on the bases to protect personnel, where soldiers could take cover during drone attacks.
At least 30 soldiers from the 2nd Brigade were injured during the drone attacks and were awarded the Purple Heart medals, including the unit’s senior sergeant.
Before deployment, the soldiers underwent a brief “drone academy.”
However, their official training for countering drones remained limited, and there were virtually no standardized instructions in the U.S. Army at that time.
For 80-90% of the personnel, this deployment was their first combat experience.
In just a few months of service, the unit destroyed over 110 drones.
The military also adopted elements of the Ukrainian experience – they started covering equipment and buildings with special anti-drone nets.
The specific systems used to destroy the drones are not specified.
A wide range of systems were likely employed – from Patriot to C-RAM close-in defense systems.
