A group of soldiers from Ukraine’s 61st Mechanized Brigade captured a Russian soldier as they were leaving their position after 100 days of defending it.

The brigade’s press service reported that the soldiers took up positions at “Baron” in the Hulyaipole sector on May 14 and held the position until August 20.

During that time, they repelled enemy assaults, operated under constant fire, and fought off attacks by enemy drones.

“Daily contact with the enemy, ambushes, assaults, enemy drones, and disrupted logistics – yet they continued to hold the position,” the brigade reported.

During one of the assaults, the soldiers held off the enemy for about 30 minutes, after which drone operators joined the fight.

According to the military, around 20 Russian soldiers who attempted to dislodge the Ukrainian defenders were killed during the defense of the position.

During the withdrawal from the position, the soldiers spent three days navigating the most difficult part of the route. They moved under the protection of Ukrainian drone operators, who monitored enemy UAVs and helped establish a safe corridor.

“Step by step, escorted by our drone systems, which kept watch over the enemy’s ‘eyes,’ cleared a corridor, and instructed us over the radio when to move and when to freeze and wait,” the 61st Mechanized Brigade shared.

During the withdrawal, the Ukrainian defenders managed to capture one Russian soldier.
