44th Artillery Brigade Receives New Version of Bohdana Self-Propelled Howitzer

Ukraine’s 44th Separate Artillery Brigade has received a newly upgraded version of the Bohdana self-propelled howitzer, featuring a redesigned armored cab.

The update was presented in a recent video published by ArmiyaTV, Ukraine’s military broadcaster.

The new configuration is at least the fifth known version of the domestically produced Bohdana system, which has undergone several iterations using different chassis and cab designs.

In the video, Ukrainian artillery personnel praise the system’s accuracy and mobility. However, they note a key drawback: the height of the breech complicates the loading process.

Despite the semi-automatic gunner installed, the military does not use it due to technical features. According to them, the design does not provide for simultaneous loading and aiming of the gun.

“One thing works: either the gunner is aiming or the projectile is being loaded. Since we have to work quickly, the guys load it manually while the gunner is already aiming,” one serviceman explains. “It works, but it takes time. In manual mode, we can fire a round in one minute. In automatic mode, it stretches to two.”

The 44th Brigade began receiving the 155 mm Bohdan self-propelled howitzers in November 2024, marking a recent expansion of their artillery capabilities.

The Bohdana, officially designated as the 2S22, entered serial production in early 2023.

Depending on the chassis and armored cab used, the cost per unit ranges from €2.3 million to €2.8 million.

To mitigate risks from Russian attacks and ensure continuity of production, the manufacturing process has been distributed across multiple facilities, including locations abroad. No single component is produced at just one site.

Recent enhancements to the Bohdana system include the integration of a ballistic radar, which measures shell velocity and allows for more precise fire correction. This has significantly improved accuracy.

According to Army Technology, the monthly production of the Bohdana has reached 36 units.
