A Yak-52 aircraft of the Armenian Air Force crashed during a training flight.
As a result, two crew members were killed.
The plane crash occurred on the morning of Friday, July 19, near the town of Yeghvard in the Kotay region, which is located about 20 kilometers north of the capital Yerevan. Local rescuers received a report of the crash at 9:30 am.
An operational group of the regional rescue department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and one department of the fire and rescue squad and rescue teams then arrived at the scene.
Initially, it was reported that an An-2 plane had crashed, but judging by the photos of the wreckage, it was a Yak-52 training aircraft.
It probably belongs to the 60th Training Aviation Squadron of the Armenian Air Force, based at the Arzni airfield in the Kotayk Province.
It has not been reported what caused the crash, which killed two crew members.
Although Armenia is still Russia’s partner in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), this did not prevent it from launching joint military exercises with the United States on July 15.
The Eagle Partner 2024 maneuvers will last until July 24 in Armenia.
The training is part of the preparation for participation in international peacekeeping missions.
They involve Armenian peacekeeping forces, members of the U.S. Army in Europe and Africa, and the Kansas National Guard.
“The purpose of the exercises is to increase the level of coordination of units, exchange best practices in the field of management and tactical communication, and improve the combat capability of the Armenian unit,” the Ministry of Defense of Armenia said.
