German automaker Volkswagen is exploring the possibility of producing military vehicles at its factory in Osnabrück.
This was reported by Reuters, citing a company representative.
According to him, the company has already developed several military vehicle concepts to assess potential demand.
They were presented at the end of February at the Enforce Tac defense exhibition in Nuremberg.
The event brought together more than 1,400 participating companies and about 26,000 security and defense professionals.
The Volkswagen plant in Osnabrück is currently looking for new areas of development.
This is due to the fact that the production of the T-Roc convertible at the plant is planned to be completed in 2027.
The plant employs about 2,300 people.
Previously, the company considered selling or repurposing the production site.
In particular, negotiations were held with the Rheinmetall defense concern at the end of last year.
The exhibition featured prototypes of MV.1 and Crafter MV.2 military vehicles, based on the Amarok pickup truck and the Crafter van, which have been adapted for military use.
Earlier, auto giant Volkswagen announced that it also wants to enter the defense industry: the company expressed its readiness to join the production of military equipment.
